ANSI

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the official US representative of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is a private non-profit organization that does not develop standards itself but oversees the development and use of the voluntary US standardization system in the private sector by accrediting the procedures of standards-developing organizations. ANSI accreditation signifies that the procedures that are used by standards developing organizations "meet the Institute's essential requirements for openness, balance, consensus, and due process."

ANSI was founded in 1918 as the American Engineering Standards Committee (AESC). It is currently headquartered in Washington, DC. In 1931, the group became affiliated with the US branch of the IEC, which had been formed in 1904.
